Your car in High School - Who had one?

The epitome of "cool" was having a car and being able to drive it to school. I never achieved such greatness. The closest I got was riding my bike to School, primarily because I missed the bus again. I remember there were a few pretty cool cars in Grissom's parking lot though - and some interesting stories that went with them. If you were one of the lucky cool ones - What kind of car was it? Share a car story. My Dad owned a high power Neon Green Dodge Duster in 1974 with racing stripes but never let me take it School. He did let me use it to go out on occassional dates, but that was rare. And I have some interesting stories along that line.

1964 Volkswagon "Baja" Bug.  JD was witness to the evolution of this vehicle.  I cut the front and back ends off of it along with the fenders.  Rebuilt the engine and had the heads milled for increased compression.  It did not have a fast top end, but it was quick.  Saved up my money and bought a fiberglass "Baja" kit for it and added aluminum wheels and wide raised letter tires (from a Corvette).  When I bought it, it was a few shades of blue, light green, and primer.  It evolved into a light sky blue (think Tarheel blue).

You need to retell the story about the first test run through the muddy cotton field!

JD,

Here's a car story. Mrs. Sauer asked us to go cut her a six foot Christmas tree one year. Ron Sauer and I took my old blue dune buggy with the roof off, up to Green Mountain to find a tree. (At this point some alot of beer was consumed) We found a six foot tree, cut it down and had it hanging out the back of my dune buggy as we drove home with our prize. We could not understand all the puzzled looks we got as we drove the tree down Bailey Cove Road back to the Sauer's house.

We were quite suprised to see the tree stood to the top of their second story roof when we stood it up in the driveway.

Mrs. Sauer was not happy. The top six feet ended up in their living room and the rest in a woodpile. Cheers! Dan Wallace

I lived vicariously through my friends who had cars. Alas - I didn't own a car until college. My Dad, at one point had two Dodge Dusters with racing pin stripes, one in neon orange, and one in neon green. I used the Green one occassionally to date, but I had to behave to get it and my parents were divorced and I lived with Mom. So getting it was problematic at times.

The car was a 1973 Plymouth Roadrunner "Richard Petty Blue" with "STP Red Stripes".

It was pretty easy to spot in the parking lot.

Mike Bangham not only had great hair in high school, I thought he had a great car.  It was a 1968 (is that right?) yellow Camero with black interior.  I don't recall it having AC, but I loved that car anyway.  It had a manual transmission, and he tried to teach me to drive it, but that was the hardest clutch to push in.  Mike was also a good driver.  If my memory is correct, we were going to dinner the night of our senior prom when a car pulled out in front of us and he had to go off the road (we were on the parkway) and dodge a telphone pole so we didn't hit it.

Mike definately had a yellow camaro, I think was a 1968.  During spring break of 1974 I came down from NY and stayed with David Langhout.  David had a dark green camaro SS 396.  One evening David, Mike, Cahil Quirk and myself took David's camaro to Tenn so we could drink legally.  On the way up David of course got a speeding ticket.  On the way back David broke the golden rule of breaking 2 laws at once.  Actually 3 if you count running from the police.  After we finished our consumption of alcohol and heading back to Ala David of course was speeding again.  Of course we went right past a Tenn state police and David decided one ticket was enough for one night and off we went.  I honestly thought we were all going to die in a high speed crash.  After a period of time with the trooper out of sight behind us we pulled into a parking lot and ran into the bushes.  We stayed there probably an hour and the trooper drove through twice looking for us.  Finally when the coast looked clear we headed back to Huntsville.  As we drove into Huntsville there was a road block with multiple police cars and lights flashing waiting for us.  David was hand cuffed and put in a patrol car.  I was in the back seat of another patrol car with Mike.  It so happened the police office who had us worked as a part time security guard wherever Mike was working.  I think that kept us out of jail.  He gave Mike an I a ride back to wherever his yellow camaro was parked.  I can't remember what hapenned to Cahil.  Mike and I then drove to the county jail where we had to sit several hours while David did his mandatory time in the drunk tank.  I then had to use what cash I had to bail him out.  The next morning I was covered in poison ivy from the bushes we were hiding in.  A night i will never forget.
