2020-05-15T10:33:44-04:00First real job!RE: Claim your clique
So, we were all just human beings, of the ages typical of what is to be expected to attend high school, trying the best we could, with whatever mental, physical, and emotional assets and resources we could muster, to figure out how to address the challenges and opportunities we faced each day. And I guess, other than the high school attendance thing, we still do that today; now being in our 'senior', or 'twilight', or 'advanced, or 'whatever' period in life we are.

I am just thankful that we all had what we had, so we could all grow to be what we are today. My only regret is that along the way, I may have been hurtful (no, not physically) to some.

So I have tried to figure out what the clique I would best describe fitting in. But once I do, I come up with more of them. And then I find I just don't nicely fit in any one of them. So in the end, I'm just me! I'm certainly not what I was when I started this journey 64 years ago, and I most certainly will not be the same when I end this journey.

But I will say, I have been priviliged to have been at the place (GHS), and time (71 - 74), to have known all of you.

2020-05-14T19:31:23-04:00Your car in High School - Who had one?Hey, my dad's going fishing for the weekend...
With a bunch of guys from work. Hmmm, what can we do? What could possibly go wrong! This girl I knew was having a birthday. And she had a boyfried that had graduated from Grissom a couple years earlier? Okay, I'm a bit old, and have lost some of the details. Anyway; 'let's have a party'! My mom will be home, but she won't mind...

So, what started out as just a few folks over to listen to some live music, turned into cars being parked up and down the street for blocks in every direction imaginable. And yes, someone called the cops..... Whoopsie!

So I come out of the house to meet them, and one of them has his hand on the side of the pickup truck parked in the driveway. So he says, "I hear there has been some drinking going on". As he is eyeing the 1/3 full pickup truck bed full of empty beer cans.

And a freind of mine stumbles over, and wobbles around a bit, and says, "there's no drinking going on here".

Thankfully the cops were nice guys and told us to keep it down and they left.

And my 84 year old mother still remembers, with a big smile on her face, how a bunch of the girls would drift upstairs from time to time and just chat.

If I left out anything, or if anyone remembers any other 'interesting' things from that night; please let me know. I won't describe all the 'stuff' we found the next day in the yard...

2020-05-14T19:27:51-04:00Hey, my dad's going fishing for the weekend...Graduation Night
I remeber Graduation Night. After the ceremonies at the Stadium, my parents suggested having so folks over. I remember it had rained earlier that day, and the afternoon plan had been rained out. That afternoon plan was to play baseball at the ball field at Chaffee Elementary which was in my backyard, and drink beer. You see, my dad had built a big bar in the 'game room' and had a refigerator that he converted to hold a keg of beer. I digress.....

Anyway, a bunch of you all came over and we played pool in the game room and drank beer. Lots of beer. So much so, that we drained the keg. And then my dad sent my mom out to buy more. In the meantime, my dad began arm wrestling some of the girls for drinks. And he could make a good drink. And of course, he always lost, and the girls always got a drink....

Thankfully, everyone got home safely (as far as I know)!

2020-05-14T12:24:48-04:00Graduation NightRE: Secrets of the Smoking Court
And let's not forget the "Great Speckled Bird". It was a great underground newspaper. I have come across old issues from time to time on the internet, and I have downloaded 17 issues. They are always interesting to go through to see a different aspect of what life was back then. I think I even sold some to make some pocket change.....

2020-05-14T12:09:29-04:00Secrets of the Smoking CourtRE: Your car in High School - Who had one?
Mike definately had a yellow camaro, I think was a 1968. During spring break of 1974 I came down from NY and stayed with David Langhout. David had a dark green camaro SS 396. One evening David, Mike, Cahil Quirk and myself took David's camaro to Tenn so we could drink legally. On the way up David of course got a speeding ticket. On the way back David broke the golden rule of breaking 2 laws at once. Actually 3 if you count running from the police. After we finished our consumption of alcohol and heading back to Ala David of course was speeding again. Of course we went right past a Tenn state police and David decided one ticket was enough for one night and off we went. I honestly thought we were all going to die in a high speed crash. After a period of time with the trooper out of sight behind us we pulled into a parking lot and ran into the bushes. We stayed there probably an hour and the trooper drove through twice looking for us. Finally when the coast looked clear we headed back to Huntsville. As we drove into Huntsville there was a road block with multiple police cars and lights flashing waiting for us. David was hand cuffed and put in a patrol car. I was in the back seat of another patrol car with Mike. It so happened the police office who had us worked as a part time security guard wherever Mike was working. I think that kept us out of jail. He gave Mike an I a ride back to wherever his yellow camaro was parked. I can't remember what hapenned to Cahil. Mike and I then drove to the county jail where we had to sit several hours while David did his mandatory time in the drunk tank. I then had to use what cash I had to bail him out. The next morning I was covered in poison ivy from the bushes we were hiding in. A night i will never forget.

It was a 1968 (is that right?) yellow Camero with black interior. I don't recall it having AC, but I loved that car anyway. It had a manual transmission, and he tried to teach me to drive it, but that was the hardest clutch to push in. Mike was also a good driver. If my memory is correct, we were going to dinner the night of our senior prom when a car pulled out in front of us and he had to go off the road (we were on the parkway) and dodge a telphone pole so we didn't hit it.

I tried waitressing a couple of times, but I couldn't carry more than two plates at a time. None of the veteran waitresses told me I could carry more if I put towels on my arms to protect them from the hot plates.

2015-02-26T20:10:25-04:00First real job!RE: Claim your clique
I guess I would claim "hippie" although I really think it claimed me. While I felt uncomfortable (maybe intimidated would be a better word) around other "cliques" I felt embraced by the hippies although I don't think we ever referred to ourselves as that. Come to think of it, I don't know that we referred to ourselves as any type of group. It just seemed to be a bunch of kids who had common interests, mainly music. The smoking court conversations always seemed to revolve around music, at least for me, except when Steve Hill would sell his Duncan yo-yos. Then it was a competition to see who could do the best yo-yo tricks. There was other smoking going on in the stairwells until the smoking court was moved to the monitored bricked area outside the cafeteria. Then it was just cigarette smoking...a nasty habit that I finally ditched in 1987.

My boyfriend at GHS was in the Class of '72 so I didn't really spend much time with my own class. That's probably why I recognize very few people from '74. I do remember several that transferred over from Mt. Gap (and even Weatherly Elementary) and some from my home room but, other than that, not many. I went to several football games but it was mainly to hang out and listen to the band.

I've enjoyed reading all the posts especially as the Reunion got closer and then the post-Reunion comments. It's great that you all (ya'll) have fond memories of good times at GHS. Go Tigers!

I also remember something about MD 20/20 and a band trip to Six Flags, but my memory is sort of addled with regards to that event. I think this was a Mogen David fortified wine, the favorite of winos at the time.

Didn't have enough confidence in my letter forging attempts either. Worked for Junior & Senior years. I think we were required to put the sticker on our driver's license because I don't remember a school ID.
