In Memory

Kathleen Wright Schwarz

Kathleen Wright Schwarz was killed in an automobile accident in Mobile Alabama in 1978. She was heading to take her state board exams as a new Medical Technician, having just finished her BS at USA (in three years rather than 4... she was brilliant).

I knew Kathy in Girl Scouts.  I remember being at her house that was on top of the hill behind Weatherly Elementary school... we were making Christmas ornaments and crafts.  Even as a little girl I knew she was smart!  She had a sweet personality and I remember her giggling when she didn't know what to say.  We grew apart as I stopped Scouts in 7th grade.

I scanned the back of the photo too.  I thought it was interesting because it is in Kathy's handwrighting, at age 10 she had the presence of mind to indicate the grade as well as the year!

She was on the scholars' bowl team with Russell Barr and me when we were in 12th grade, which was a good thing since she was the only person on the team who really knew any literature!

George Hamilton, John Lewis, Kathy, and I all attended the University of South Alabama following graduation from GHS.  That first year (74-75), John and George roomed together and Kathy and I roomed with whomever the USA Housing Computer selected for us.  MId-way through the year George and I received invitations to attend the GHS MiIitary Ball in the Spring of '75.  This wasn't unexpected as the unit had a policy of inviting the previous year's Battalion Commander (George) and the Executive Officer (me) to the military ball following graduation.

That of course, required that we each find a date who was willing to travel up to Huntsville with us to attend a high school dance. George quickly arranged for Kathy to be his date.  At first, Kathy suggested I take her roommate.  That suggestion quickly turned to insistence.  I agreed, and very surprisingly, so did Kathy's roommate. The four of us traveled to Huntsville and back together, talking and laughing the whole way, and the two ladies stayed with Kathy's parents. My date, Ann Smith, and I had a wonderful time together, and continued to date each other after we returned to USA.  In fact, I became a fixture in their dorm room, and later their apartment.

Later this year (November) Ann and I will celebrate our 36th anniversary.  Ann and I have had a wonderful life together, rasing a beautful and talented daughter, who now has two sons; in addtion to her husband -- of whom I approve :)

I am forever thankful that Kathy (and the USA computer) brought me together with my soul mate and life partner. Kathy was a fantastic person and we love and miss her.
