I ended up at Randolph my Junior year because I had it in my head that Mr. Reynolds had it out for me. It was so bad that I was really close to just dropping out of school altogether. I didn't drive 9th or 10th grade, so if I was late for school, it was not my fault. It didn't matter though, lot's of sunrise study halls. I'm sure it wasn't his goal to make a shy, quiet girl want to drop out of school, but that was the result.

I wish I had stayed put and toughed it out though. I missed out on a lot by leaving that one year.

I never went to sunrise study hall but I don't think I have ever chewed gum again!

One of the teachers caught me for chewing gum & I had to go see Mr Reyolds.  I went to his office showed him my gum & said "but it's orange Mr Reyolds...(I think I remember a little smile & him say "But that doesn't make it OK to chew gum in school.")  Still had to go to Sunrise, but  I remember him having a lot of school spirit!

In memory of Ray Reynolds:

The uncontrolable combination of students,  Seth Garcia, Scott Ledbetter, yours truly(Jim Erben, Bruce Lee and Mark Horton........were in Spanish Class listening to a recording and repeating it, we were all divided into groups of 5... anyway, Ms. Johnson (substitute teacher) left the room while we learned the lesson.  Seth Garcia was a brilliant mind and had a knack with electronics, so basically, he took the headset and plugged it into the microphone jack and recorded his own message to repeat over the Spanish recording....OMG, we thought the next class would get the new and improved recording, but the last 10 min of classs Ms.Johnson comes back with the head of the foreign language department so she can listen to all of us repeat the lesson.......needless to say they all thought something was wrong with the recorder (the ENTIRE class was in stiches) out of nowhere Seth says, ERBEN DID IT, i recanted, no I didnt Garcia did it, then Ledbetter and so forth... Ms Johnson was totally embarrassed in front of the head of the foreign language department and sent five of us to Ray Rays office... each of us got 5 licks....Ray Ray however was a cakewalk where the licks were concerned compared to Coach Bowlin, when he gave licks, your feet came off the ground.......

and this classmates was another TIGER moment

Every time I got Sunrise Study Hall, my parents made me walk. To leave the house in those days, I had to wake up at 4:30 to leave at 6:30. It took 2 hours to look perfect. Haha. Now 10 minutes, I'm done!!!

My most memorable time involving Mr.Reynolds..(gay Ray) as we called him then...was in 10th grade...I was in Lilybud Garrets English class, when Bobby duitt and Ben Long snuck a small chain thru my belt loops and locked it to my desk...the commotion of me trying to get them to undo it got her attention and she asked me to move to the front of the class...(we were in the back of the classroom)..when I told her I couldn't because I was chained to my desk..she became infuriated!!! Of course everyone was howling and laughing by now....so she sent me and Ben and Bobby...desk and all chained to me...to Mr.Reynolds office...if you could have seen his face!!! He said he thought we needed a "tiger put in our tank"...To make long story short...I did get unchained and sent back to class...Ben and Bobby both got "licks"...just hilarious to think back that this really happened.

In spite of the licks, the sunrise study halls , [ I never made it past the State Capitols], and the controversey about the pep vs. cultural rally's; I will always remember him standing in the office on that horrible Monday in September, 1971, when we were all signing up to go to the  funerals for Johnny, Ef, Kit, and Lynn. He was acting as a grief counselor before that became a job description. He, like us, was a product of his times. But in retrospect he truly seemed to care about the students.

Dear Ray Reynolds, he was an Orange fan being a Tennessee grad! His office had that famous white and orange checks wall! He had a a stern look always!  I think he had the colors picked for our school. He made me s crape the bottom of the stairwell in front of the office, because I chewed gum!!!
